In this study, postnatal metal (loid)s (MLs) exposure was compared between the petrochemical and gas area of Asaluyeh (PGA) and urban area of Kaki (UA) in Bushehr province, Iran. Two hundred human breast milk (BM) samples from the industrial and urban areas were analyzed for MLs using Inductivity Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and nickel (Ni) were found at the highest levels in both study areas. Adjusted multiple linear regression models revealed that the mean concentration of total MLs in BM samples collected from the PGA was statistically significantly greater than that of the UA (655.85 vs. 338.17 µg/L). Also, the mean concentrations of all detected MLs in BM samples collected from the PGA were statistically significantly higher than those collected from the UA. The hazard index (HI) of combined MLs in the PGA and UA illustrated non-cancer risk for infants. Lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) in the PGA and Cr in the UA showed the risk of cancer. So it can be concluded that nursing infants from an industrial area are most at risk for MLs exposure during entire lactation course than those from an urban area.

RESUMEN

The basic homogeneous SEIR (susceptible-exposed-infected-removed) model is a commonly used compartmental model for analysing infectious diseases such as influenza and COVID-19. However, in the homogeneous SEIR model, it is assumed that the population of study is homogeneous and, one cannot incorporate individual-level information (e.g., location of infected people, distance between susceptible and infected individuals, vaccination status) which may be important in predicting new disease cases. Recently, a geographically-dependent individual-level model (GD-ILM) within an SEIR framework was developed for when both regional and individual-level spatial data are available. In this paper, we propose to use an SEIR GD-ILM for each health region of Manitoba (central Canadian province) population to analyse the COVID-19 data. As different health regions of the population under study may act differently, we assume that each health region has its own corresponding parameters determined by a homogeneous SEIR model (such as contact rate, latent period, infectious period). A Monte Carlo Expectation Conditional Maximization (MCECM) algorithm is used for inference. Using estimated parameters we predict the infection rate at each health region of Manitoba over time to identify highly risk local geographical areas. Performance of the proposed approach is also evaluated through simulation studies.

A survey was administered to describe research perceptions among college-level students in combined baccalaureate-MD (BA/MD) programs in the United States. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze participant research perceptions. The estimated response rate was 26% (430/1653). Most respondents conducted scientific research in high school and college and reported barriers to research participation. Key barriers to research participation included lack of time, research knowledge or experience, and sufficient research guidance as well as the disruptions of COVID-19. Most respondents reported that research-supporting programs were available at their institution and perceived faculty mentorship programs as the most helpful for broadening their research experience. Geographically dependent individual level models (GD-ILMs) are a class of statistical models that can be used to study the spread of infectious disease through a population in discrete-time in which covariates can be measured both at individual and area levels. The typical ILMs to illustrate spatial data are based on the distance between susceptible and infectious individuals. A key feature of GD-ILMs is that they take into account the spatial location of the individuals in addition to the distance between susceptible and infectious individuals. As a motivation of this article, we consider tuberculosis (TB) data which is an infectious disease which can be transmitted through individuals. It is also known that certain areas/demographics/communities have higher prevalent of TB (see Section 4 for more details). It is also of interest of policy makers to identify those areas with higher infectivity rate of TB for possible preventions. Therefore, we need to analyze this data properly to address those concerns. In this article, the expectation conditional maximization algorithm is proposed for estimating the parameters of GD-ILMs to be able to predict the areas with the highest average infectivity rates of TB. We also evaluate the performance of our proposed approach through some simulations. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed method provides reliable estimates of parameters which confirms accuracy of the infectivity rates.

Medical schools implemented holistic review more than a decade ago, which led to more deliberate consideration and inclusion of applicants historically underrepresented in medicine. This article presents a theory of holistic enrollment management that unites holistic review with enrollment management principles. This theory contextualizes medical school admissions as a complex marketplace with multifaceted, competing forces. Applying an enrollment management framework of mission, market, means, and metrics can improve the capacity of a medical school to efficiently advance its mission over time. Medical schools employing a clear, compelling, and focused mission to direct all aspects of the medical education enterprise can more effectively attract applicants who are better prepared to enact that mission throughout their careers. Medical schools share a marketplace and collectively compete to identify, attract, admit, and matriculate the most mission-aligned student body within the pool of applicants they share. Institutions that deliberately mobilize resources within this dynamic marketplace will engage, admit, and matriculate the most suiting applicants and attract even more mission-aligned matriculants over time. Widespread adoption of this holistic framework of enrollment management may enhance the capacity of the medical education system to better capitalize on the existing diversity in the national pool of applicants, encourage more underrepresented applicants to apply in the future, admit and matriculate a more diverse national student body, and ultimately better prepare new physicians to meet the increasingly diverse health care needs of the nation.

Osteoporosis diagnosis is usually based on examination of the hip bone and vertebrae density; however, the radius bone has gained attention recently in terms of feasibility and accessibility as it is done by portable devices with proper precision. This study aims to compare hip and spine density with radius, knowing whether radius may be an appropriate alternative for osteoporosis diagnosis. 120 females who were referred to one Densitometry Center checked their skeletal status using a hologic unit for densitometry of spine, femoral neck, and one-third radius. The patients were divided into three groups of healthy, osteopenic and osteoporotic based on WHO's protocol. Concordance analysis was done to investigate the degree of similarity of diagnosis. In the study, there were 40, 41, and 39 individuals with normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic bone densities, respectively which obtained from hip bone or vertebrae using the T-score criterion T-score of radius bone density has a direct linear relationship with these result. Osteoporosis diagnosis can be made based on radius densitometry.

RESUMEN

In this data article, we measured the levels of copper in the blood of patients undergoing coronary angiography. The samples were taken from patients with cardiovascular disease in Bushehr׳s university hospital, Iran. Patients were divided in two groups: normal angiography and abnormal angiography. After the chemical digestion of samples, the concentration levels of Cu in both groups were determined by using inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES).

Heat-shock proteins (Hsp) play an important role in stress physiology. Exposure to a variety of stressors will induce intracellular Hsp72, and this induction is believed to be beneficial for cell survival. In contrast, Hsp72 released during stress (extracellular Hsp72; eHsp72) activates pro-inflammatory responses. Clearly, physical stressors such as heat, cold, H(2)O(2), intense exercise and tail shock will induce both intra- and extracellular Hsp72. The current study tested whether a psychological stressor, cat exposure, would also trigger this response. In addition, the potential role of adrenal hormones in the Hsp72 response was examined. Adult, male Sprague Dawley rats were either adrenalectomized (ADX) or sham operated. Ten days post-recovery, rats were exposed to either a cat with no physical contact or control procedures (n = 5-6/group) for 2 h. Levels of intracellular Hsp72 were measured in the brain (frontal cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, dorsal vagal complex) and pituitary (ELISA). Levels of eHsp72 (ELISA) and corticosterone (RIA) were measured from serum obtained at the end of the 2-h stress period. Rats that were exposed to a cat had elevated intracellular Hsp72 in hypothalamus and dorsal vagal complex, and elevated eHsp72 and corticosterone in serum. Both the intra- and extracellular Hsp72 responses were blocked or attenuated by ADX. This study demonstrates that cat exposure can stimulate the Hsp72 response and that adrenal hormones contribute to this response.
